Sustain 2501, is a new innovative anti-foam entering the liquid beverage, beer and alcoholic markets since early 2015 after many years of research and subsequently patenting the ingredient.
South Africa privileged to be at the forefront of this roll-out, has already proven the impact of this innovation in its carbonated soft drink (CSD) and malt beer production plants.
Sustain 2501 is a unique patented processing aid used to control and retain carbonation in carbonated beverages. It reduces fobbing and foaming during the filling process, particularly attractive is its additional benefits.
- It is unique
- No competitor alternative
- Not a silicone
- Works in the bulk of the product, not only on the surface like a silicone
- Does not leave a ring mark on the surface of the bottles
- Extends CO2 shelf-life
- Improved production efficiencies = cost savings
- Enhances consumer taste experience – keeps the drink fizzier for longer.
- This part has to be demonstrated by means of a glass pouring test.
How it works: Sustain operates by means of clever carbonation – it creates more bubbles and smaller fizz bubbles, for the same volume of CO2, which not only controls foaming, but delivers several additional benefits that customers are most excited about.
Due to Sustain holding on to the gas in the bulk of the liquid it has a major impact on keeping larger packaging size cold drinks fizzier for longer, which generally loses its gas quite quickly from being opened and resealed several times.
Executive Summary – Sustain Benefit Overview:
- Production efficiencies: Less foaming, faster packing, less wastage, energy saving – can pack off at ambient (13C recommended average), shelf-life extension ito CO2 retention and improved consumer experience.
- NO label changes required, registered as a processing aid.
- 13C is ideal for can filling, no heat jackets required (energy saving) to remove the condensation, to prevent rusting at the bottom of the tins.
- 2016 Local trial delivered an extra 2.5 months CO2 shelf-life on a 500ml carbonated energy drink, PET packaging.
- Fact: smaller size packaging (330-500ml) poses the biggest problem ito CO2 losses.
- The consumer profile testing of products containing Sustain remains remarkable.
- Consumers perceive products containing Sustain to be “fresher” and “fizzier”.
- Such due to retaining a higher amount of CO2 for longer, and due to the bubbles being smaller.
- Some companies are selecting to reduce the dose of CO2 used as SUSTAIN optimises the amount of CO2 injected.
- Compare filling a container with golf balls vs marbles – same amount of CO2, just more bubbles.
- Some companies are investigating lighter PET due to better retention of CO2 with Sustain in the product – major costs benefit.
- Supports production efficiencies and cost savings due to moving from full sugar to partially artificially sweeteners replacements.
- Sweetener issue: increases foaming, lessens CO2 solubilisation – higher rejection rates, requires increased chilling, slows line speeds, slows turn-around time, higher CO2 usage, shelf-life – all cost implications.
